Top 10 Books for 10 Year Olds:
On a number of kids’ books “hot lists,” The Trials of Apollo, Book 1: The Hidden Oracle by Rick Riordan also manages the top position for ten year olds this year.
Zeus is mad enough to kick his son Apollo off of Olympus, sending him hurling to New York City in the form of a normal teenage boy. Only this teenager is chased relentlessly by demi-gods, demons, and other destructive creatures.
Rick Riordan is an experienced writer and he mixes fun and adventure well. While it is not necessary to have read the earlier series, I would strongly recommend doing so before picking up this one. There are many references to characters and events from his past books.
In theme this book is very similar to Marvel’s Thor movie in which a god becomes mortal but takes some time to adjust to his new situation. I enjoyed Apollo’s character development and how he changes throughout the course of the adventure, perfect for a ten year old.
The War that Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley also hits high among the top 10 books for 10 year olds in 2017.
Ada is nine-years-old with a twisted foot, a cruel mother, and a one-bedroom apartment that has been her prison since she was born. In the dead of night, this little girl ventures to London to escape her mom and the devastations of World War II. What a powerful, profound story.
The WSJ got it right when they said: “Achingly lovely . . . Nuanced and emotionally acute, this vivid tale from the wartime home front will have readers ages 10-14 wincing at Ada’s stumbles and rejoicing to the point of tears in her victories.”
Third up on the list – Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling.
I loooove Harry Potter. In the original, Harry Potter discovers who he is—a hereditary wizard with untapped magical abilities. This is the introduction to the world of Hogwarts. Of course, I am STILL waiting on my Hogwarts letter. Wink!
Rowling also has the uncanny ability to make her characters, as well as the magical world around them, seem so real! From the very first moment, the reader becomes immersed in this very quirky, wonderfully weird world, where nothing is as it seems, unexpected surprises await, and household chores can be accomplished by the mere wave of a wand (something I positively loved).
Circus Mirandus by Cassie Beasley comes in fourth among the ten best books for ten year olds this year.
Micah Tuttle is a curious kid who believes in fairytales and magic. When Micah hears about the Circus Mirandus from his Grandpa Ephraim, he sets out to find it and a talented magician. One who can bend light and move the universe. This is a book about belief and miracles.
Micah has spent all of his ten years hearing his Grandpa Ephraim’s wonderful and magical stories of Circus Mirandus and thought that that was exactly what they were: stories. Grandpa Ephraim is now very ill, indeed, and reveals to Micah that the stories were all true. Not only that, but that when Ephraim visited the Circus many years ago, the Lightbender promised him a miracle and that he has called for that miracle to be honored.
Micah and his friend, Jenny Mendoza, battle to get his Grandpa his miracle. They have some wonderful adventures and become good friends along the way.
A great book for ten year old girls – The Care and Keeping of You 2: The Body Book for Older Girls by Cara Natterson.
You’ve heard about the original Care and Keeping of You, but this is the second edition for older girlies (10 and up). From peer pressure, to advanced hygiene, puberty, and personal care, this book covers everything girls need advice for.
Sixth up on the list – Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, Book 1: The Sword of Summer by Rick Riordan.
Another must-read from Rick Riordan. This book is about Magnus Chase, a troubled boy who lives on the streets of Boston. Living by his street smarts, survival instincts, and wits, Magnus learns that he’s the son of a Norse god. Impossible, never. Includes Viking stories about the Gods of Asgard.
When an attack by fire giants forces him to choose between his own safety and the lives of hundreds of innocents, Magnus makes a fatal decision. A fun and entertaining book for ten year olds and above.
A returning hit among books for ten year olds – Laugh-Out-Loud Jokes for Kids by Rob Elliott.
There are over 100 pages in this book, each packed with laugh-out-loud jokes. There are several different categories, like knock-knock jokes, classic funnies, and one liners. I am sure that, as a parent, you will hear all of them. Ha!
Children will laugh each time they read this collection of hundreds of one-liners, knock knock jokes, tongue twisters, and more. My kids couldn’t stop sharing the jokes with me, they loved it. Want your kids giggling and laughing all the time, buy this this awesome book as a gift. .
The Land of Stories: An Author’s Odyssey by Chris Colfer hits 8th of the best books for 10 year old kids in 2017.
Connor is an author of short stories—ones of daring adventures, sword fights, and far-off lands in distant galaxies.
However, his villain, The Masked Man, challenges Connor and his friends to a challenging, death-defying race through his own short stories.
As a fan of The Land of Stories series, I thought this would be fun for my kids and I wasn’t disappointed. My kids loved it and really were immersed in this book. Great book for 10 years olds for sure.
Raymie Nightingale by Kate DiCamillo hits 9th on the list.
Raymie Clarke is an ambitious, sad little girl whose father left town with a dental hygienist two days ago. BUT if she can do a series of things, like win Little Miss Central Florida Tire, then her daddy will see her newspaper picture. Then he HAS to come back. Right?
To win, not only does Raymie have to do good deeds and learn how to twirl a baton; she also has to contend with the wispy, frequently fainting Louisiana Elefante, who has a show-business background, and the fiery, stubborn Beverly Tapinski, who’s determined to sabotage the contest. But as the competition approaches, loneliness, loss, and unanswerable questions draw the three girls into an unlikely friendship — and challenge each of them to come to the rescue in unexpected ways.
The Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook by Dinah Bucholz makes it to 10th on the list of books for 10 year old boys and girls in 2017.
Another Harry Potter treasure. This book is a cookbook of Cauldron Cakes, Chocolate Frogs, and hundreds of other must-try yummies from the Harry Potter books. Kiddos (with adult supervision) can mix, bake, and devour spellbinding dishes with magical, charming origins.
